The Suzuki Swift: A Living Icon
If you haven’t heard of the Suzuki Swift, there aren’t many others like you.
However, the good news is, you’re about to!
The Origin
Suzuki first launched the Swift in 1983, however, in Japan it was called the Suzuki Cultus and came in either a three-door hatchback, four-door sedan, five-door hatchback and two-door convertible. In 2000, however, the Swift replaced the Cultus in Japan, and interestingly enough, for the rest of the world it was called the Ignis (which we of course recognise from another Suzuki hatchback currently being produced.)
2004 saw the first official generation of the Swift and looks how we know it today, with the iconic hot hatch shape which we commonly see on our roads.
The first-gen Swift experienced great success, as they developed it to be a compact sports car, in most markets it sold above sales forecasts, and double the forecasts in Japan.
In Australia, this generation started sales in 2005 and remained relatively the same each year until 2017. This is why you see so many on the road that look almost identical, with each year only having minor facelifts and improvements to the engine and interior, which is why they’re so easily recognizable and iconic.
From 2004-2005 Suzuki actually doubled their sales numbers in Australia, largely attributed to the introduction of this generation of the Suzuki Swift.
Since 2005, Suzuki has sold over 142,000 units of the Swift, so we can objectively say, Aussies love the Swift!
Where are they now?
Styling
The all-new Swifts definitely maintains the same presence, image and feel of the much loved previous generation, but now they’re even better.
Style-wise, Suzuki has managed to uphold the same design aspects that make the Swift so recognisable and improved other aspects to make it a stylish and sportier head-turner.
Featuring a more aggressive looking front grill and headlights and sharper body lines that progress through every body panel, the new Swifts look angrier and ready to perform.
Following this, is a perfectly balanced rear that continues the similar shaped taillights of previous generations, but in a modernised fashion.
Interior
The modernisation continues into the cabin. Featuring a sport flat-bottom steering wheel, semi-digital gauge cluster, and a massive 9” screen, featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The Swift is loaded with the newest technology too, with voice recognition, hands-free phone and maps, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and autonomous emergency braking.
Under the hood
The external upgrades aren’t the only improvement you’ll notice.
The Swift features two engine options, the first being their 1.2L inline 4-cylinder Dualjet engine, which produces a modest 66kw and 120Nm, this engine is available in the base model Swift GL.
If you’re after someone zippier, you’ll want either the GLX or Swift Sport. These feature a 1.0L 3-cylinder Boosterjet engine. This adds 16 more kw to make 82 and brings peak torque up to 160Nm.
These obviously aren’t supercharged V8 numbers, but that doesn’t matter. Because of the Swift’s light weight, the Swift Sport still reached 100kms in a respectable and fun 7.4 seconds.
