Australia’s Newest EV Coming from GWM: The Ora Cat
Within the last year in the automotive industry, it seems as though every car brand has announced the development or release of an electric vehicle, Great Wall Motors (GWM) has now been the latest to do so.
Whereas other brands encapsulate their different model segments under the same brand, such as BMW using X for their range of SUVs and M for their performance cars, GWM has approached their brand organisation by creating an entirely new brand for each different model segment.
Under GWM they have Haval (which are their SUVs), Tank (which are their off-road cars) and now, for their EV range, they have announced ‘Ora.’
At this moment, the one Ora model coming to Australia is 2022 is known as ‘The Ora Cat’.
Known as the Hao Mao in China, the Cat is stated by GWM as being the “first pure electric model built based on the GWM pure electric platform and coffee intelligent ecology with retro and trendy style.”
While this may not mean much for many people at face value, this could actually be a large step for GWM and the car industry in general.
Safety Oriented Chassis
GWM has been outstanding in their ANCAP tests for their recent cars, with the GWM Ute recently receiving 5/5 stars. This emphasis on safety has continued for Ora, where they developed the chassis specifically for safety.
In essence, they took the 18 typical usage scenarios and ANCAP strict requirements as a baseline and developed their highly intelligent modular technology platform to optimise all these situations, to ensure maximum enjoyment and safety of their users.
Therefore, as safety is becoming one of the biggest priorities for Australian buyers, the Ora Cat is expected to be a hit.
Styling
Another way in which GWM has been gaining attention in the car market is through their unique and stylish designs. Great Wall Motors has always managed to know who their customers are for each new model, and specifically tailor it towards them.
The design of their new electric vehicle forms ground for a lot of discussion. Starting from the front, they have perfectly integrated the ‘no-grill’ look, and appears as a slightly rounder Tesla Model 3, with apparent inspiration from Porsche regarding shape, placement, and angle of the headlights.
The smooth and sleekness continues all throughout the car, where a classic hatchback shape is welcomed in the rear with very futuristic design elements being integrated.
These features combined with the bright and two-tone colour options creates perhaps the most eye-catching car to be released in 2022.
Therefore, it seems as though GWM is expecting their key buyers to be the younger generations that enjoy out standish design that pushes the boundaries or normality in the best way possible.
Interior
The interior is not surprising once you have looked at it from the outside, with not one sharp angle in sight.
The two-tone colour options continue into the cabin to compliment the rest of the car and features plush and comfortable materials and combines the gauge cluster and infotainment system into one massive and immersive screen.
Technology also appears to be in abundance, with all features you would expect in any car today, with many automated features to make the driving experience as enjoyable as possible.
Conclusion
GWM also mentions how their lightweight and efficient power delivery will provide an impressive drive range and include 104kw of power, which from a car that only weighs 900kg, creates a power to weight ratio similar to that of a new Audi A4, which is a formular for a pretty fun car.
The Ora Cat comes at a suitable time where electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular, without having a very saturated market, and with all these features combined with what is expected to be a cheap price tag compared to other EVs on the market, there is large potential for the Ora brand to have large success in Australia.
